Blog 2-Attention-Deficit/ Hypereactivity Disorder
As we all have heard ADHD and assume that is mostly a child or individual that is super hyper and acts out but the truth is that is not the case. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is known for the acronym of ADHD which according to National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), is a disorder that is ongoing pattern of inattention or hyperactivity to impulsivity that interferes their daily activities, functions or development (NIMH, n.d.). Inattention is when not be able to focus on simple tasks such as doing homework for a certain time or tends to wander off during tasks; hyperactivity is when an individual has an excessive of movements like fidgeting or taps and in adults seem more restless with constant activity; impulsivity is when doing an action without thinking ahead that can put them or others in harm or excessively interruptive among others.
Most of the symptoms are these behaviors inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity or a combination of all three that children can show these signs as early as 3 years old according to Mayoclinic (mayoclinic, 2019 June). There is a spectrum of ADHD that can vary from mild, moderate or severe and start at a young age of 3 to adulthood which often are shown in males that females will tend not to be notice of their symptoms. For example, girls may be quiet but not be able to stay focus and be inattentive and boys will show more of an aggressive and hyperactivity. This is why sometimes parents get confused or do not realize their children have ADHD and some grow up without ever been diagnosed correctly. The causes of ADHD according to Mayoclinic have mentioned that is not clear exactly what causes but there is a link from genetics such that if siblings or a parent that has it, the child is most likely to develop ADHD or it can be environmental or problems due to the nervous system that affects the development (mayoclinic. 2019 June).
There is no cure for ADHD and for that there is treatments with medications, psychotherapy, education or a combination of all treatments. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it mentions that the best treatment for children who are diagnosed with ADHD, is by combination of medication and behavioral therapy which includes parents getting trained and educated about the disorder (CDC, n.d.). The most common medication that is taken for ADHD is stimulants that are increased the hormones of dopamine and norepinephrine, which help with focusing and thinking (NIMH, n.d.)With good monitoring and follow ups which will help managing the symptoms having a healthy habits such as healthy eating habits (less sugar which can trigger the symptoms to heighten), participating physical activity and getting some good sleep which CDC recommends (CDC, n.d.).
Most of the population that have been estimated to have ADHD are children which is 5% and since 2003 it has increased to 6.1 million (9.4%) according to National Survey of Children's Health which among them 5.2% are taking medication between the age of 2-17 years old (CDC, n.d.).
